Flammability ratings are a critical but often overlooked aspect of printed circuit board (PCB) design. Among the most referenced standards is UL 94, which classifies plastics and polymeric materials based on how they burn when exposed to flame. Within this standard, UL 94V-0 and UL 94V-1 are especially relevant to PCBs, laminates, and insulating components.

Understanding the difference between these two ratings helps engineers balance safety, compliance, reliability, and cost.

Overview of the UL 94 Vertical Burning Test

UL 94 is a plastics flammability standard developed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). The “V” (vertical) classifications evaluate how a material behaves when mounted vertically and exposed to an open flame.

During testing:

· A flame is applied to the material twice

· After each application, after flame time, afterglow time, and dripping behavior are measured

· Cotton placed below the specimen checks whether molten drips ignite secondary fires

The most common vertical ratings for PCB-related materials are V-0 and V-1.

UL 94V-0 is the most stringent vertical flammability rating commonly used in electronics.

Why UL 94V-0 Matters in PCB Design

PCBs operate in environments where electrical faults, overheating components, and arc events are possible. A V-0 rating significantly reduces the risk that a localized fault escalates into a sustained fire.

Typical PCB-related uses:

· FR-4 laminates (standard PCB substrate)

· High-density PCBs

· Power electronics boards

· Battery management systems

· Consumer electronics requiring regulatory approval

Because of its superior fire resistance, UL 94V-0 is often required to meet safety standards such as IEC, EN, and regulatory certifications used in consumer and industrial electronics.

UL 94V-1 Explained (Limited Use in PCBs)

UL 94V-1 is less strict but still provides basic flame resistance.

· Flame extinguishes within 30 seconds

· Flaming drips are allowed, as long as they do not ignite cotton

· Higher allowable total after flame time

Where UL 94V-1 May Appear in PCB Systems

While V-1 materials are rarely used for the main PCB substrate, they may be acceptable for:

· Low-power or low-voltage boards

· Internal insulating supports

· Connectors, spacers, or mechanical fixtures

· Products where fire load and fault energy are minimal

In PCB assemblies, V-1 materials are generally limited to non-critical components and not the board laminate itself.
